Dear Comrades of PS, SP and sp.a,

All of us are still shocked by Tuesday’s terrible terrorist attacks at Brussels International Airport and at the Maelbeek metro station, places where we (Belgians and Europeans) could have been – as we cross these places on a daily basis - on the wrong moment. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. Our thoughts also go to those fire workers, policemen and –women, doctors, nurses and other staff who were immediately at the scene to help, support and save lives. The trauma will last longer than the headlines in the media. And again many questions will remain unsolved.

Though not very encouraging, we know with certainty that terrorism can hit at any time as DAESH has decided to open the front on our continent as a reply to military action against them on “their” territory. Being aware of the risks should neither nourish fear nor promote hysteria.

Living together in a democratic and tolerant society is the great challenge for socialist and social democratic parties. We stand together to build fairer, more open and democratic societies, promoting social justice and peace. We owe it to the victims and to ourselves!

In solidarity with the victims and their families of the Brussels attacks,

On behalf of SPD Brussels

Özgür ÖNER,
Tanja Bergrath
