Brussels, 20 June 2016

Dear Comrades,

It is with great sadness that we had to witness the news regarding the tragic death of Jo Cox MP last week. This devastating attack on an aspiring politician who just did her job showed to us all how ferocious political debates have become in Britain and beyond. Jo fought for her conviction that Britain should remain in the EU. She fought for what she was sure to be best for her voters, her constituency and the country.

It is alarming that the poisonous rhetoric of populists across Europe have led to a climate in which some feel righteously empowered to verbally and sadly even physically attack elected representatives. The attack on Jo was not only an attack on the political position of an individual, but an attack on our shared values and on democracy itself.

Therefore, on behalf of SPD Brussels and all its members, we want to express our heartfelt condolences with Jo’s family and all the comrades in our sister party. We wish you all the best for Thursday’s vote on the referendum and we hope that together we will be able to change the political climate in Europe for the better. We stand beside you to uphold Jo’s legacy - her belief that we have more in common with each other than what divides us.

In solidarity,

On behalf of SPD Brussels

Özgür ÖNER,
